The Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) is scheduled to begin scientific operations in Semester 25A (February 2025-), and the era of large amounts of high-sensitivity, multi-object spectroscopic data is fast approaching.
The PFS Subaru Strategic Program (PFS-SSP) to be conducted using the PFS will target more than several hundred thousand galaxies in the Galaxy Evolution (GE) and Cosmology (CO) Surveys, of which 1-10%, or at least several tens of thousands, are expected to harbor AGN. Therefore, it is important to prepare for the coming of the PFS era by considering in advance a wide range of scientific activities that take advantage of the large AGN samples that will be obtained in the near future. In addition to the SSP observations, it is also equally important to consider Subaru open-use proposals to fully utilize the wide wavelength range, deep sensitivity, and wide field of view (multiplexity) of the PFS.
Following the 1st PFS AGN town meeting held last year, this 2nd PFS AGN town meeting will provide the Japanese community with an opportunity to get an overview of the important parameter spaces of the Subaru PFS-SSP (especially GE and CO Surveys), and will serve as an entry meeting not only for researchers who are already familiar with the PFS-AGN science, but also for Japanese graduate students who will be deeply involved in PFS observations and will play a key role in the future of PFS-AGN science. This meeting will also provide an opportunity to discuss the planned and new PFS-AGN science cases and to exchange ideas. Not only proposals based on the SSP survey, but also research ideas utilizing Subaru/PFS open-use times and various multi-wavelength surveys (Euclid, eROSITA, etc.) are welcome.
すばるPrime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) の観測開始がS25A (2025年2月-) に予定され、高感度かつ多天体分光観測データが大量に手に入る時代が目の前に迫っている。
観測開始と合わせて計画されているPFS戦略枠 (SSP) 観測では
銀河進化 (Galaxy Evolution; GE) サーベイ
および
宇宙論 (Cosmology; CO) サーベイ
にて数10万天体を超える銀河が観測予定であるが、そのうち1-10%、つまり少なくとも数万天体はAGNを持っていると予想される。
よって、近い将来得られる大規模AGNサンプルを活かした幅広いサイエンスをあらかじめ検討し、PFS時代の到来に備えることが重要である。
またSSP観測だけではなく、PFSの持つ幅広い波長域、深い感度、および広視野を活かした一般共同利用枠観測の検討も同等に重要である。
昨年開催した第1回PFS AGN town meetingに引き続き、今回の第2回PFS AGN town meetingにおいても、すばるPFS戦略枠観測 (SSPサーベイ, 特にGE, COサーベイ) の重要なパラメータスペースについての概略を把握できる機会を日本人コミュニティに提供することで、今までPFS-AGNサイエンスについて触れてきた研究者だけでなく、 これから新たにPFS観測に深く関わり、PFS-AGNサイエンスを将来的に担う日本にいる大学院生 (および2025年度が大学院生となる学部生) のエントリーミーティングともなることを目標とする。 また、PFS-AGNサイエンスを検討、アイデアを出し合い議論できる機会を提供する。 SSPサーベイをベースとした研究提案だけでなく、一般共同利用枠を利用したPFS-AGN観測提案、PFSと各種多波長サーベイ (Euclid, eROSITA等) と組み合わせた観測提案についても歓迎する。
